About Hairpin Drive

Most "best scenic drives" lists are vibes. Hairpin Drive is numbers. Every route on this site is ranked by a measured winding index — the average degrees of direction change per kilometre, computed from actual road geometry, not from someone's memory of a nice afternoon.

How the winding index works

We take the road's real centreline geometry, walk it point by point, and sum the bearing changes along the way. Divide by distance and you get °/km. A dead-straight interstate scores near zero; a mountain pass stacked with hairpins can score 200+. Distances and drive times are measured by routing over the actual road network — not straight-line guesses.

What we care about

• Paved roads only. Every route is filtered for paved surfaces.
• Posted limits. These roads are enjoyable at a relaxed, legal pace — the joy is the shape of the road, not speed. Drive smoothly, yield to locals and cyclists, and pull over to let faster traffic by.
• Data you can check. Each page shows distance, estimated drive time, and the winding index for the exact segment mapped.

Who runs this

Hairpin Drive is built by an independent developer who also builds REVV, a drive-companion app for scenic routes. The site currently covers British Columbia & Washington plus a Korean collection, with more regions on the way.
